Good to know

Three short lessons from the "Good to know" highlight on Karobar's Instagram: what a good workplace looks like, what a good manager does, and what counts as unprofessional.

What is organisational culture?

Organisational culture is the set of beliefs, values, philosophy and expectations shared by everyone in an organisation. It shapes how people think and act, and everyone who joins picks it up.

And who sets it? The managers and leaders.

What does a good work culture look like?

  • Room to grow

There are real chances to progress, and nobody feels stuck.

  • Mutual respect

Colleagues and managers respect and trust each other and say thank you. It is the mark of a healthy organisation.

  • A fair workload

The amount of work is reasonable and people are not under constant pressure.

  • Clear roles

Duties and responsibilities are defined; everyone knows who does what.

  • Fair pay, on time

Salaries are paid on time and match the work people are given.

  • Work and life in balance

There is room for a life outside work.

  • Job security

Stability and security are signs of a good job.

In the end, people are happy at work when relationships are healthy, between managers and staff and among colleagues. That needs everyone to be capable and to do their part.

What makes a good manager?

If you manage people, this is a checklist. If you are looking for work, these are signs to watch for in the interview and the first weeks.

  • Trusts the team
  • Gives regular feedback and thanks, so people know their work is seen
  • Does not make sudden decisions under stress
  • Appreciates people and keeps them motivated
  • Divides work and duties sensibly
  • Has reasonable expectations
  • Talks mistakes through and looks for the cause
  • Never belittles anyone and treats people with respect
  • Pays salaries on time
  • Pays in line with the workload and the hours

Unprofessional habits

Better avoided. Any one of them can hide even the best skills.

  • Running late

You arrive late to work and to meetings.

  • Excuses

You don't do your part and make excuses.

  • Personal calls

You spend a lot of time on personal phone calls.

  • Disrespect

You don't respect your manager and colleagues.

  • Gossip

You talk behind your colleagues' backs.

  • Me first

You put your own interest before everything.

  • Hygiene

You don't look after personal hygiene.

  • Negativity

    You have a negative attitude.

  • Always complaining

    You are always complaining.
